The North-South Institute is an independent research institute in the field of international development. The Institute does research on Europe relations with developing countries and other foreing policy, international trade and international monetary issues.

The aim of the Institute is to promote de North-South dialoge in the civil society and the debate on development aid from the North to the South.

The Institute is independent from political parties, but as a non-partisan organization with NGO status, is elegible for European Union, State and other public administrations subsidies. The Institute has NGO status with the United Nations.

The Institute will focus with its researchs, studies, conferences, publications and campaigns on bringing closer the civil society to the problems and opportunities that countries have in the developing world, and in promoting international aid, trade and tecnoligical transfer.

The Institute is an active supporter of sustainable development and sustainable democracy, and wants to participate with other NGOs in the formation of a third sector, that of the civil society, in the XXI century.

The Institute participated in the conversation leading to the new Lomé Convention (at present, Cotonou), which link the European Union and its 15 member states with the 77 ACP countries of Africa, Caribbean and Pacific. The Institute makes contributions to the reform of the United Nations system and its specialised agencies, in particular the International Monetary Fund and The World Bank.

The promotion of the objetive of the 0´7% of the GDP for oficial development aid thoughout the countries of the North, and other UN recomendations is a priority for the Institute.

 

RESEARCH PROGRAM

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES

The Institute will carry feasability studies for development project and programmes and will act as consultant agent for the execution of some projects financed by the European Union, the World Bank, regional development banks and UN programmes.

FINACING, ADMINISTRATION AND PATRONAGE

The Institute is financed by individual contributions, corporate grants, institutional subsidies and the revenue of sales of publications. Some research and studies would receive ad hoc external finance.

The Institute has an Executive Board, and a Board of Patrons, with personalities from a broad range of activities of the civil society, enterpreneurs, business leaders, journalist, academics, politicians, economists and activists of NGOs.

It is the willingness of the Institute to reflect the plurality of today´s civil society, upholding the priciple of independence, freedom and laicity, acting in interdependence with other national and foreing institutions, working to promote development and globalisation, such as the Society International Development and others.

Up
